Here is today’s news

Thank god for animal stories. While a
Kangaroo faces a competition enquiry, a
Giraffe leads a dash for freedom in Amsterdam,
And tigers select a new coach.
In politics, a TV chef loses the chicken vote,
Which inspires a turkey’s slow motion coup.
Closer to home, a kind crocodile birdman is to raise funds
To ensure a new partner is found by a golden eagle
And that the whale meet ends with peace agenda.
Surprisingly, biometrics picks up the penguins.

This is a found text poem in response to a prompt at readwritepoem, based on newspaper headlines that I came across today that either genuinely or apparently have a connection to animals.

  1. Yeah, I really like this, it must have taken a bit of research to get it to flow just right, well done!

  2. The giraffe story is amazing:

Dutch police suspect that a giraffe was responsible for a herd of animals escaping from a travelling circus in Amsterdam today.

Fifteen camels, two zebras, several llamas and pot-bellied pigs ran free early this morning in the Dutch capital, according to the Reuters news agency.

“We suspect that a giraffe kicked open a pen,” Dutch police said, adding that the animals did not get far before they were rounded up and returned to the circus.

  3. Good grief, that’s a recurring nightmare of mine, escaping zoo animals……I like what you did here, Lirone.

  4. Hi and welcome sweettalkingguy – the first few headlines came easily and were, indeed what prompted me to get started – finding the others took more time and effort!

Jo – sorry to revive your nightmares. I hasten to point out out that these were all herbivores except the pigs, so not too terrifying I hope!

  5. The story about the giraffe is hilarious… and also inspiring in a way. I like how each of the animals can be seen as a metaphor, and it’s amazing that these are all found text. Bravo!

  6. A menagerie of beasts unleashed in a poem. Interesting idea for a found poem.

  7. Thanks for the post
